How Amsterdam City Tax Works

Most cities charge a flat rate as a tax. But Amsterdam is different. Instead of charging a flat rate, city takes 12.5% of your accommodation cost.

Here's what you need to know:

The city applies the 12.5% rate to your room price before VAT. Your hotel, Airbnb host, or other accommodation provider collects this tax directly from you. You cannot avoid paying this tax – all visitors must pay it, regardless of age or purpose of visit.

What Counts as Your Room Rate?

Amsterdam bases the tax on your accommodation cost excluding VAT. This includes:

  • Hotel room rates
  • Airbnb nightly fees
  • Bed and breakfast charges
  • Hostel bed costs
  • Holiday rental prices

The tax does not include cleaning fees, service charges, or booking platform fees. Only the base accommodation rate counts toward the 12.5% calculation. Therefore, make sure you take only the base accommodation rate for calculating the tax.

When Did Amsterdam Increase the Tourist Tax?

Amsterdam almost doubled its tourist tax rate on January 1, 2024. The rate jumped from 7% to 12.5% overnight. This makes Amsterdam the most expensive city in the Netherlands for tourist tax.

City officials increased the rate to manage overtourism and fund city maintenance. This additional income helps Amsterdam maintain its historic canals, museums, and public spaces that millions of tourists visit each year.

How to Pay the Amsterdam City Tax?

Accommodation providers usually collect the city tax together with your accommodation charges. So you do not have to worry about visiting the city council or any other government officials to pay the City Tax
